Legal Aid Help Reunites Lucky With Her Husband

Lucky Begum got married when she was 16 years old. But her married life was not very good. Due to the negligence of her husband Abul Kalam Sheikh, all the peace in the world was gone. Lucky Begum was Abul Kalam Sheikh’s second wife. Her life with two children became very difficult and painful. Lucky did not get any help from people door to door. Lucky eventually learned about FAIR’s legal aid help by attending one of FAIR’s legal aid help sessions in her area. A few days later, on April 15, 2015, she came to the FAIR Community Legal Service Center (CLSC) and filed a complaint seeking justice and support. Her complaint number is KCCWA-0255.

Introduction to Legal Aid Help

Lucky Begum, having faced years of hardship, learned about FAIR’s legal aid help from her local community center. The support she received became her beacon of hope, especially after hearing about the Making Women Legal Rights a Reality in Bangladesh project, which is actively providing legal aid to women like her in Khulna through 4 established Community Legal Service Centers (CLSCs). This project, run by FAIR (Friends Association for Integrated Revolution) in collaboration with BNWLA and Community Legal Services, was instrumental in providing Lucky the resources she needed to fight for her rights.

Legal aid help became Lucky’s beacon of hope. FAIR CLSC, Khulna immediately registered her complaint and conducted a fact-finding to verify the truth of the situation. Due to the facts of the incident, FAIR CLSC took immediate steps to mediate. They sent a letter to Abul Kalam, but at first, he refused to accept it.  FAIR CLSC paralegal then provided a notice. And Abul Kalam was asked to attend the mediation/arbitration. Later, on the appointed day, in the presence of both parties, the FAIR CLSC heard the arguments of both and settled the grievance through mediation.

Empowering the Helpless:

Legal aid help gave Lucky a platform to voice her grievances and seek justice. It empowered her to take a stand against negligence and claim her rights.

Ensuring Accountability:

FAIR CLSC’s actions ensured that Abul Kalam could not shirk his responsibilities. Their persistent efforts brought him to the mediation table, ensuring accountability.

The process has brought a lot of relief to Lucky, who had been struggling for over two and a half years.
