Project Overview
The Promoting Science Education and Strengthening Science Clubs (PSE-SSC) project is a transformative initiative designed to build a self-sustaining ecosystem for STEM and debate education across secondary schools in Bangladesh. Building upon a successful 7-year foundation, the initiative bridges critical gaps in rural science education through specialized clubs, hands-on learning, and a community-backed financial model.

The Challenge & Context
In rural Bangladesh, secondary science education often remains confined to memorization due to a lack of functional laboratories, practical learning tools, and interactive platforms. This has led to a declining interest in science subjects and a fear of mathematics and analytical thinking.
Since 2019, FAIR has worked to break this stagnation across 30 secondary schools in Kushtia. Following the 2025 donor funding phase-out, FAIR transitioned the framework into a community-owned, self-reliant model—the Sustainable Science Education Movement in Secondary Schools (SEMS).
Key Objectives
- Specialized Club Activation: Establish and operationalize 120 specialized student clubs (Science, Math, Physics, and Debate) across 30 target schools.
- Hands-on & Research-Based Learning: Engage students through bi-monthly practical experiments, “Little Scientist” local research projects, and nature observation drives.
- Competitions & Fairs: Organize annual intra-school science fairs, math/physics olympiads, and an annual Central Inter-School Science Fair.
- Institutional Sustainability: Form permanent “Science & Education Funds” in every school through alumni networks and local donors to ensure long-term financial independence.
Core Project Components
- Student-Led Governance: Each specialized club is governed by a 15-member Executive Committee (12 students across Grades 6–10 and 3 teacher mentors) operating under an official constitution.
- STEM & Logical Reasoning Activities: Regular club sessions, wall magazines, quarterly digital newsletters, and library circles (“Friends of Books”) foster analytical skills and scientific communication.
- National Alignment & Registration: Register school science clubs under the National Museum of Science and Technology and provide technical mentorship for national-level competitions.
- Alumni & Community Engagement: Establish dedicated school databases and WhatsApp networks to connect former students and local philanthropists with ongoing club initiatives.
Expected Impact (By 2029)
- 70%+ Student Empowerment: At least 70% of participating students will demonstrate enhanced creative, analytical, and leadership skills in STEM.
- 100% Club Sustainability: 120 specialized clubs will operate independently through registered school bank accounts and permanent sustainability funds.
- Enhanced Resource Utilization: Practical lab equipment and library resource usage in target schools will increase by over 50%.
- Replicable Model: Establish Kushtia Sadar as a nationwide model for community-owned science education.
